Minor Standard Craft Mk 2

Program Status: In Progress. The Danish Five-Year Defense Agreement 2000-2004 authorized the construction of six Minor Standard Craft Mk 2 patrol boats. On 03 December 2004, the Danish Naval Materiel Command (NMC) signed a contract (approximately US$45M) with Faaborg Vaerft A/S for the construction of the six vessels. Faaborg as primary contractor, subcontracted the construction of the fiberglass hull and superstructures and propulsion package to Kockums of Sweden. Delivery of the first vessel will begin in January 2007 and the last unit will be delivered in April 2008.

Operational Requirement: The Royal Danish Navy (RDN) has a requirement for a modern force of patrol boats for surveillance and Coast Guard duties in Danish home waters.

Program Background: The block obsolescence problem facing the RDN’s auxiliary and small patrol boat force is similar to that of the RDN’s small combatant force in the 1980s. At that time, RDN planners were confronted with the problem of replacing 22 small ships of different types (six fast attack craft (FAC), eight patrol boats, and eight mine countermeasures(MCM) vessels) with a budget that would not support one-for-one replacement. To solve the problem, the RDN conceived the idea of having a standard hull, with a standard propulsion plant, designed in such a way that it could take a variety of containerized equipment and weapon loads to suit various missions. This idea, now known as the Standard Flex (STANFLEX) concept, was implemented in the highly successful Flyvefisken class of multi-role vessels.

Using the success of the Flyvefisken class as a precedent, the NMC decided to develop a Minor Standard Craft, featuring the STANFLEX concept, as the replacement for its aging force of small patrol boats and auxiliaries. Originally, it was planned to build the Minor Standard Craft in two versions, a Mk 1 with one STANFLEX container position, and a stretched version, the Mk 2 with two positions. However, recent changes in staff requirements altered the original concept and a new Mk 2 design with one container was developed to meet the new requirements. .

Program Acquisition Plan: The Danish Five-Year Defense Agreement 2000-2004 authorized the construction of six Minor Standard Craft Mk 2 patrol boats for the replacement of the nine Barsoe class patrol boats currently in service. The construction contract, worth around US$45M, was awarded to Faaborg Vaerft on 03 December 2004. Faaborg, as primary contractor, subcontracted the construction of the fiberglass hull and superstructures and propulsion package to Kockums of Sweden. When the hull and propulsion package is complete, the vessels will be returned to Faaborg Vaerft for fitting out and sea trials prior to commissioning. The six patrol boats will be commissioned into the RDN from January 2007 through April 2008.

The construction schedule for the class is as follows:

  • Construction Contract Award 2004

  • Hulls One through Three Commission 2007

  • Hulls Four through Six Commission 2006

  • Design and Construction Considerations: The new Minor Standard Craft Mk 2 are 43 meters (141ft) in length and displace 180 tons. The hulls and superstructure will be built of glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) and will be powered by two MTU diesel engines. The craft will have one STANFLEX container position. This position will be interchangeable and may utilize the following containers:

  • A dinghy for search and rescue, and boarding operations (with storage module).

  • An anti-pollution storage module with oil booms, skimmers, chemicals, storage tanks, etc.

  • A module for a crane.

  • A module for a winch.

  • A basic storage module.
  • The patrol boats will probably be armed with two 12.7mm machine guns.
