Denmark – Royal Danish Navy Home Guard (RDNHG)
MHV 900 Class Patrol Craft
Rewritten – November 2006
 |
MHV 900 Class Patrol Craft
Program Status: In Progress. The first
four units of the class were commissioned into the Royal Danish Navy
Home Guard (RDNHG) as of the end of 2005. The final two units began
construction in 2005 and will be commissioned by the end of 2006.
Operational Requirement: The RDNHG has a
requirement for a modern force of patrol craft to perform coastal
surveillance, coastal traffic control, and search and rescue (SAR)
operations.
Program Background: The Danish Government
awarded three separate US$10M construction contracts (1991, 1993 and
1997) to Soeby Motorfabrik & Staalskibsvaerft (now Soeby Vaerft) of
Soeby Aeroe, Denmark for the first eighteen units (three batches) of
the Aldebaran (MHV 800) class patrol craft.
In 1999, Parliament passed Defense Agreement
2000-2004, which authorized up to six additional units of the
class (Batch IV). However, the RDNHG decided to move forward with a
larger modified version of the MHV 800, designated as the MHV 900. A
construction contract was awarded to Soeby Vaerft on 28 June 2002
for six units of the class.
Program Acquisition Plan: The first four
units of the class were commissioned into the RDNHG as of the end of
2005. The final two units will began construction in 2005 and will
be commissioned by the end of 2006.
The construction schedule for the class is as
follows:
Construction Contract Awarded 2002
Hull One Commissions 2003
Hull Two Commissions 2004
Hull Three and Four Commission 2005
Hulls Five and Six Commission 2006
Design and Construction Considerations: The
MHV 900 class is a modified version of the Aldebaran (MHV 800) class
patrol craft. The MHV 900s are constructed of steel hulls like the
MHV 800s, however are 27.2 meters (89.2ft) in length vice 23.7
meters (77.8ft). The extension has resulted in a design with a
longer quarterdeck with additional space for pollution control
equipment, a rigid rubber dinghy and a new hydraulic crane. The MHV
900 also features an improved navigation system, and improved
accommodation facilities and endurance.
The MHV 900 is powered by the Saab Scania DSI-16
V8 diesel engines for improved speed and endurance over the MHV 800,
which utilizes the Saab Scania DSI-14 engines.
