Denmark – Royal Danish Navy Home Guard (RDNHG) Patrol Craft

Rewritten– November 2006

Program Status: Planned Likely. Defense Agreement 2005 – 2009 released in June 2004 called for the procurement of five new patrol craft for the Royal Danish Navy Home Guard (RDNHG). Funding (DKK90M – US$14.6M) will be provided for five patrol craft to replace the MHV 90 class. A Request for Proposals (RfPs) can be expected by 2007 with a construction contract in 2008.

Operational Requirement: The RDNHG has a requirement for a modern force of patrol craft to perform coastal surveillance, coastal traffic control, and search and rescue (SAR) operations.

Program Background: In June 2004, the Danish Parliament released the latest defense directive, Defense Agreement 2005 – 2009. Highlights of the Defense Agreement called for the strengthening of the Home Guard through the acquisition of up to five new patrol craft to replace aging patrol vessels in the force. Funding will be authorized in 2007.

The five new patrol craft will probably be constructed at Soeby Vaerft in Denmark since Soeby is currently constructing the MHV 900 class patrol craft and built the eighteen units of the MHV 800 class from 1992 through 2001. The five new vessels are expected to follow the MHV 900 class and replace the six MHV 90 class that were commissioned from 1973 through 1975.

Program Acquisition Plan: This new patrol craft program was planned in the Defense Agreement 2005 – 2009 that was released in June 2004. The plan calls for five new patrol craft that will be funded beginning in 2007 (DKK90M – US$14.6M). An RfP can be anticipated by 2007 in order to affect a construction contract by 2008. Soeby Vaerft is expected to be the prime contractor and builder of the vessels as they have built the majority of the RDNHG’s patrol craft. All five units of the class will be commissioned from 2009 through 2011 and will replace the six MHV 90 class currently in service.

The following acquisition plan, for five units, valued at an estimated US$2.9M each, is projected:

  • Contract Design 2005

  • Construction Contract RfP 2007

  • Construction Contract Awarded 2008

  • Hull One Commissions 2009

  • Hull Two and Three Commission 2010

  • Hulls Four and Five Commission 2011

  • Design and Construction Considerations: Design and construction considerations are purely speculative at this time. However, it is anticipated that the new patrol craft will be similar in dimensions and capability as the MHV 900 class currently under construction at Soeby Vaerft. It is possible that these new vessels could be a modified design of the MHV 900, which is also a modified version of the Aldebaran (MHV 800) class patrol craft. The new vessels will probably be constructed of steel and will probably be around 27 meters (88.5ft) in length and displace up to 95 tons. Like the MHV 900, the new craft will probably have additional space pollution control equipment, a rigid rubber dinghy and hydraulic crane.

The new vessels will probably be powered by Saab Scania diesel engines and armed with one Oerlikon Contraves 20mm/70 gun and two 7.62mm machine guns.
