Egypt – Future Roll-on/Roll-off (RO/RO) Ship

Rewritten – June 2010

Program Status: Projected

Operational Requirement: The Egyptian Navy (EN) has a requirement for a roll-on/roll-off (RO/RO) ship for the movement of cargo, and to transport Egyptian ground forces in support of United Nations (UN) operations.

Program Background: The EN has a long-term requirement for a multi-purpose vessel with a drive through capability. Currently, all US Foreign Military Sales (FMS) funding (US$1.3B) and national funding is tied up in other Naval and Coast Guard programs such as the Fast Missile Craft (FMC) and assorted patrol vessels as well as Air Force and Army programs. Additionally mine countermeasures vessels (MCMVs) and tank landing ships (LSTs) are also planned and may have priority over the RO/RO ship. More than likely, the EN will build its own RO/RO ship at the Port Said Shipyard with national funds.

Program Acquisition Plan: There is no formal acquisition plan in place for a new RO/RO ship. However, the EN will probably begin conceptualizing the new vessel around 2013, with a construction contract around 2017. Based on the following information, the following acquisition plan, for a buy of one unit valued at an estimated US$100M is projected:

  • Concept Start 2013
  • Concept Select 2014
  • Contract Design 2015
  • Construction Contract RfP 2016
  • Construction Contract Award 2017
  • First of Class Commissions 2019

Design and Construction Considerations: Design and construction considerations are purely speculative. The new RO/RO ship will probably be 200 meters (656.1ft) in length and displace 40,000 tons (full load). It will be capable of carrying 10,000 tons of cargo, and have a rear ramp door for loading/unloading operations.
