Egypt – Other Naval Associated Acquisitions/Programs

Rewritten – June 2010

Coastal Defense Sites: The Egyptian Navy (EN) currently has a coastal defense system consisting of three Otomat truck-mounted surface-to-surface missile (SSM) batteries and two artillery brigades consisting of 100, 130 and 152mm guns. The EN will probably continue to maintain the missile and gun systems as they play an integral part in the defense of Egypt’s long porous coastline. The EN will probably continue to perform basic maintenance on these systems until replaced.

Pluto Plus: It was announced in 2009 that the EN signed a contract with US based Columbia Group through the US Foreign Military Sales Program for three Pluto Plus remotely operated vehicles. The contract is valued at US$10M. The submersibles are intended for mine countermeasures operations with a length of 2.2m (7.2ft). The first unit is expected to be delivered by the end of 2010 with the two remaining units arriving in 2012.
