RADM Dan Bowler USN (Ret.)

Daniel R. Bowler - Rear Admiral, United States Navy assumed duties as the Director of Warfare Integration and Assessment (N70) in October 2000. His previous assignment was Commandant, National War College, Washington, DC.

Born in Jacksonville, Florida, he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1970 and immediately began a career at sea as a Surface Warfare Officer. He has served at sea in USS TURNER JOY (DD 951), USS WELCH (PG 93), USS OUELLET (FF 1077), Destroyer Squadron 33, USS LEFTWICH (DD 984), USS CHOSIN (CG 65), and Cruiser Destroyer Group FIVE. He commanded LEFTWICH, CHOSIN, and Cruiser Destroyer Group FIVE. During his command tour on LEFTWICH he participated in OPERATION NIMBLE ARCHER, the naval gunfire attack on Iran’s Rashadat Oil Platform in the Persian Gulf. During his tour as Commander, Cruiser Destroyer Group FIVE, Rear Admiral Bowler served as the Deputy Director, Joint Task Force NOBLE ANVIL in Naples, Italy, assisting with the prosecution of the NATO Air Campaign against Yugoslavia as part of OPERATION ALLIED FORCE.

Ashore, Rear Admiral Bowler has served at the Surface Warfare Officer Schools Command as an instructor; on the staff of Commander THIRD Fleet as the Fleet Schedules and Services Officer; on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations in the Surface Warfare Division as the Head, Surface Combatant Readiness Branch; at the Bureau of Naval Personnel as the Head, Surface Commander Assignment Branch; and on the Joint Staff in the Force Structure, Resources and Assessments Directorate (J8) as Deputy Director, Joint Warfighting Capabilities Assessments and Deputy Director, Force Structure and Resources.

Rear Admiral Bowler has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Naval Engineering from the Naval Academy and a Master of Arts Degree in International Relations from Georgetown University. Additionally, he has completed the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Seminar XXI program in National Security.

Rear Admiral Bowler’s decorations include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal (two awards), Legion of Merit (two awards), Meritorious Service Medal (four awards), Navy Commendation Medal (two awards), Navy Achievement Medal and various service and campaign awards.
